We supply HMA for our own use and to our many contractor customers from our seven plants throughout the state. Composed of aggregate for strength and liquid asphalt as a binder, HMA offers many benefits. The Material Plant Quality Program (MPQP) provides procedures to approve proportioning material plants that produce materials for Caltrans construction projects according to the MPQP Manual and Caltrans specifications.. The following material plants require approval (but are not limited to): HMA batch and continuous; Asphalt rubber binder; Portland cement concrete batch asphalt plants in the United States. Of these 3,600 plants, approximately 2,300 are batch plants, 1,000 are parallel flow drum mix plants, and 300 are counterflow drum mix plants. The total 1996 HMA production from batch and drum mix plants is estimated at about 240 million tons and 260 million tons, respectively.
Kiewit has 3 HMA plants strategically located along the front range. Kiewit has added a state of the art new generation 2019 plant from Aztec at 2401 Piccadilly Road, Aurora, capable of 400 tons per hour with storage of 750 tons to provide a wide variety of hot mix asphalt products including HMA that has been approved by the City of Aurora for Right of Way work.
Drum plants, which produce HMA in a continuous manner, generally offer higher production rates than batch plants for comparable cost. Typical production rates for drum plants vary between about 100 tons/hr up to over 900 tons/hr depending upon drum design. Figure 1 shows the basic components of a drum plant and their functions.
